How to Give Your Home a Rebel Makeover (Without Trying Too Hard)

How to Give Your Home a Rebel Makeover (Without Trying Too Hard)

Your home doesn’t need to look like everyone else’s. Forget cookie-cutter decor and “safe” scents. Here’s how to give your space some attitude—fast.

1. Start with a custom scent

Your vibe starts the moment you walk in. Ditch the generic plug-ins and build a diffuser that’s 100% you—your bottle, your scent, your rules. No one likes a bad smell. It’s so much nicer to walk into something that feels fresh, floral, or complex—whatever you choose.

2. Add one statement piece

It could be a bold cushion, a sculptural burner, or even a moody piece of wall art. Just one item that says I don’t play it safe.

Admittedly, I have a few, but my favourite is my bright yellow chair. It’s unapologetic, and it makes the whole room feel alive.

3. Layer in texture + contrast

Mix sleek with soft. Dark with light. A hint of luxe velvet with raw stone. A mix of patterns. A little unexpected contrast makes your home feel curated, not catalogued.

4. Keep it personal

A home with attitude reflects the person who lives there. Add something playful or a little weird. My nieces and godsons draw me thousands of pictures—they’re always a bright pop of colour. My niece was only 9 when she created the pieces you see in my product photos. I had them printed on canvas, and now they’re scattered around my house as unique, true originals. No one else has them.

5. Add life

A plant—although it requires a little responsibility—is one of the simplest joys in a home. Green leaves (and bright flowers if you choose a bloomer) make the outside world feel a little closer. Throw basil and mint into bright planters in your kitchen if you like to cook, get a delicious monster for the corner so those Swiss cheese leaves cast cool shadows on the wall in the evenings, or adopt an orchid and tend to it like it’s a newborn child in the hope it will rebloom.
